OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

George Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis on January 6, 1759. Although the couple had no children, Washington adopted Martha’s son and daughter from her previous marriage. The marriage changed George from an ordinary planter to a substantially wealthy landowner. He had resigned his commission in the militia and George, Martha, Jacky and Patsy moved into the enlarged and remodeled Mt. Vernon.

The Constitutional Convention George Washington was named president of the convention and before ratification of the new Constitution, he was being urged to accept the role of the President of the United States. Upon returning to Mt. Vernon, both he and Martha realized he would be President by the beginning of 1789. In April, he was elected unanimously by the Electoral College.
