George Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis on January 6, 1759.  Although the couple had no children, Washington adopted Martha’s son and daughter from her previous marriage.  The marriage changed George from an ordinary planter to a substantially wealthy landowner.  He had resigned his commission in the militia and George, Martha, Jacky, and Patsy moved into the enlarged and remodeled Mt. Vernon.

George Washington was named president of the Constitutional Convention.  Before ratification of the new Constitution, he was being urged to accept the role of the President of the United States.  Upon returning to Mt. Vernon, both he and Martha realized he would be President by the beginning of 1789.  In April, he was elected unanimously by the Electoral College.

Would you like to learn more of the life, marriage, and birth of George and of Martha?  Join us for this free community educational event open to the public.  This is an interactive presentation with George Washington, portrayed by Brother Dean Malissa and Martha Washington portrayed by Carol Spacht.  Come and ask questions of their lives!

Following the approximately hour-long program in the Auditorium, refreshments will be served in the Refectory and those in attendance will have an opportunity to speak to and be photographed with George and Martha Washington
