Tenets of Freemasonry
The Three Tenets of Freemasonry
Freemasonry rests upon three foundational principles—called its Tenets—that serve as a guide to the lives and conduct of all Freemasons.
Brotherly Love
Every true Freemason will show tolerance and respect for the opinions of others and behave with kindness and understanding toward his fellow creatures. Brotherly Love does not end at the lodge door; it is carried into every aspect of life, extending goodwill to all of humanity regardless of religion, race, or station.
Relief
Freemasons are taught to practice charity and to care for the less fortunate within their community. Relief encompasses both the material support of those in need and the moral support of our Brothers and their families. Justice-Columbia Lodge No. 3 carries this tenet forward through our charitable giving and community service programs.
Truth
Freemasons strive for high moral standards in all they do. Truth calls each Mason to be honest in his dealings with the world, faithful in his promises, and sincere in his pursuit of knowledge and virtue. This tenet is not merely about speaking accurately—it is a commitment to living with integrity.
These three tenets are the daily practice that defines a Mason’s character and his place in the community. Justice-Columbia Lodge No. 3, chartered in 1810, has carried these principles forward for more than two centuries in service of the Nation’s Capital.
